Competitive Landscape and Development Overview of Aramid Fiber Products Industry, Market Size and Future Outlook

2024-03-20 09:07

According to industry classifications, aramid fibers are categorized under "Other Industrial Textile Product Manufacturing"; the research, development, production, and sales of aramid products are known for being technologically intensive. This sector requires research and development teams to possess solid theoretical knowledge and extensive industry experience.

Currently, there is a limited number of professionals engaged in high-end aramid fiber research and development domestically, and the training period for these professionals is long. Moreover, given the industry's frequent need to update and upgrade its technology to meet the ever-changing demands of customized orders, companies must invest heavily in new technology research and development and equipment procurement. Any misdirection in R&D or equipment purchase can lead to production capacities that do not meet market demands, thereby wasting a significant amount of production capital and resources.

Competition Landscape

Following the development of meta-aramid pulp technology by the American company DuPont, companies such as AkzoNobel from the Netherlands and Teijin from Japan developed their meta-aramid pulp technologies. Currently, DuPont and Teijin are leading the global meta-aramid pulp production with advanced technology, offering a diversified product range for various applications.

Compared to the international development, the domestic meta-aramid pulp industry has only been developing for over a decade with around ten producers, showing varying scales of operation and inconsistent product quality. In recent years, domestic manufacturers have grown due to increasing market demand. However, these companies often use side products, recycled optical cables, and aramid for bulletproof equipment as raw materials for pulp, leading to unstable raw material quality, which cannot consistently meet the diverse quality and stability demands of different application fields. Despite high-quality raw materials being provided by some suppliers to ensure product quality across various fields, the overall tight supply of upstream raw materials limits domestic companies' ability to explore the market. With domestic raw material manufacturers expanding production capacity, domestic enterprises will have more diversified and high-quality raw material sources in the future. Stable supply channels will support domestic meta-aramid pulp manufacturers in achieving localization of production.

Global Development of Aramid Fibers and Their Downstream Products

Meta-aramid was first developed by DuPont in 1966 and industrialized in 1971 under the brand name "Kevlar", expanding into downstream areas such as meta-aramid pulp. Following this, other countries began developing similar fibers and derivatives, including Twaron from AkzoNobel (merged with Teijin), Technora from Teijin, and Terlon from Russia. Over the past 50 years, aramid fibers have transitioned from military strategic materials to civilian use, with foreign development and production of aramid fibers becoming increasingly mature.

DuPont and Teijin have developed a comprehensive product range, recently focusing on customization technology to develop rubber-reinforced Kevlar29AP and Twaron1015 aramid fibers for large-scale industrial applications. Russia's new generation heterocyclic aramid fiber Rusar has a strength of 6.0GPa, over 20% higher than Armos. Additionally, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers, polyimide (PI) fibers, and poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers have reached a certain industrial scale, finding applications in aerospace, transportation, bridge construction, bulletproof and flame-resistant clothing, and competitive sports in the United States and Japan.

Currently, DuPont's Kevlar fiber has a total production capacity of 35,000 tons, with other prominent aramid producers like Teijin and Kolon from South Korea expanding production and actively exploring international markets.

Meta-aramid pulp, a highly dispersible precursor PPTA product developed by DuPont in the 1980s, competes with glass and carbon fibers as an ideal substitute for asbestos in friction and sealing applications. With the ban on asbestos use in regions like Europe and America, the development of meta-aramid pulp has accelerated.

Development of Aramid Materials and Meta-Aramid Products in China

China began researching aramid fibers in 1972, gradually developing various types of products, including standard, low-shrink, medium-high strength, and high-strength high-modulus varieties. The domestic interest in the localization and large-scale production of high-performance aramid fibers has been significant, with relevant projects included in national development plans. In 2011, Taihe New Material became the first company in China to industrialize aramid fiber production, breaking the foreign monopoly in the aramid sector. However, compared to the long-term development strategies of leading international companies, China's domestic production scale of meta-aramid remains relatively small, with leading companies dominating the supply market for medium and high-end products for an extended period.

Technologically, China has made significant advancements in key technologies for meta-aramid and

heterocyclic aramid fibers, establishing several industrial-scale production lines. The production and supply of standard meta-aramid (equivalent to Kevlar29) have been stabilized, and high-strength meta-aramid (equivalent to Kevlar129) is now supplied domestically, finding applications in hoses, bullets, optical cables, and more. Heterocyclic aramid products have reached performance levels comparable to Russia's Armos fiber, being applied in solid rocket engines and high-end bulletproof materials. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers now match the quality of leading international companies, allowing for partial substitution of imports and contributing to export revenues. Polyimide (PI) fibers have achieved a tensile strength of 3.5GPa and a modulus of 140GPa, commercializing high-temperature resistant, high-strength, and high-modulus PI fibers. Domestic research institutions have made breakthroughs in the engineering production technologies of continuous silicon carbide fibers and their composites, conducting engineering application verifications and establishing experimental lines for alumina fibers, silicon nitride fibers, and various ceramic precursors.

In terms of domestic supply of meta-aramid pulp, despite significant achievements in meta-aramid and meta-aramid pulp production technologies, the sector is still in the early stages of development. Currently, all meta-aramid pulp production uses aramid filament as the raw material, generally controlling the quality of the raw materials to ensure the quality of the meta-aramid pulp products. However, due to the tight supply of domestic raw materials, some meta-aramid pulp manufacturers resort to recycling waste to maintain production, leading to unstable raw material quality and difficulty in meeting the quality requirements of different application areas. Regarding the demand for meta-aramid pulp, it is mainly used in friction and sealing applications, with limited application scenarios currently explored.

Industry Barriers

  1. 1. Talent Barrier: The aramid fiber industry sets high standards and demands for the knowledge and experience of its workforce. Researchers need a solid and multidisciplinary knowledge base and years of practical experience, while sales staff must understand materials, mechanics, and related product knowledge. Therefore, it is challenging for new entrants to recruit, train, and establish a competitive team quickly, creating a high talent barrier in the industry.

  2. 2. Technical Barrier: The aramid fiber industry features a wide distribution of customer fields, a variety of products, and rapid updates and upgrades. Different fields require materials with specific characteristics, structural design, manufacturing standards, and precision, necessitating companies to integrate structural design, information technology, and material science technologies, and accumulate relevant data and experience, fostering the development of specialized production technicians and engineering designers.

  3. 3. Market Barrier: Over a decade of breakthroughs in aramid product technology domestically, leading companies like Taihe Xing, Sinochem International, and Shanghai Lanbang have quickly dominated the domestic market with their first-mover advantage. Large companies spend considerable time and resources evaluating and selecting manufacturing partners, facing significant customer switching costs. This emphasizes the importance of long-term and stable cooperation, making it difficult for new entrants to persuade large enterprises to replace their existing suppliers without substantial investment in time and resources.
